A common question:
I’m looking for web hosting that offers the ease of a cheap shared hosting plan (using CPanel to config) but the power of a Virtual or Dedicated plan. I don’t want to have to admin the server myself, but the cheap 4.95/mo shared plans are slow (HostGator, BlueHost, etc.). Any recommendations? I’m using a LAMP environment. I need something that can handle several hundred users a day without an issue.
Answer: This is quite a popular question. Free hosting will most probably never be the right hosting for you. Web hosting is one of the most critical thing for your business and can mean the life or death to your business.
Before we answer your question, let us review the 7 factors to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- does not suspend accounts as easily,
- gives more-than-enough webspace,
- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives multiple add-on domains,
- has easy Site Builder,
- has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.
To answer your question, 92% of Webmasters recommended to try Hostgator. If you are building your first website and needs a hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.
What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Anybody can grab an account from Hostgator for almost FREE.

Who Should Not Try Hostgator
To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:
- No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

Personally, I would recommend E2 web hosting. They offer great hosting for a very affordable price.
If you want scalability, go for their cloud servers. They start at $12.50 (+$12 for cpanel) and you can scale them up instantly.
For several hundred users a day I would probably first try their standard hosting offer (which I think will do the job easily) and move to the cloud when you outgrow it.
Here’s a link to check them out: http://www.unlimband.com/webhost/e2.php
I host most of my sites with them and I’m very satisfied with their service.
Hope this helps.

Generally you will have to manage things yourself once you move to VPS or dedicated. There is indeed a middle ground and it is called a semi-dedicated hosting where things remain just as they are with shared hosting (admin is done by the hosting company) and you do the rest. However, you get a lot more resources that are dedicated to you and hence some other big website on the same server can’t just use a lot of resources and make yours crawl. That is what happens with unlimited hosts like Hostgator and Bluehost (their shared hosting plans are no doubt very good, but for small sites not for ones with large number of visitors). They put a huge number of users on the same server and since you are not allocated a guaranteed amount of resources, you could be left in the high and dry if some other sites on the same server become very busy.
Have a look at http://hosting4beginners.webnode.com/list-of-great-web-hosts/ . MDD is a very cost effective company and they’ve got a great semi-dedicated hosting plan – even the basic would be great for you I guess. There’s another one in the list called Downtown, they are very good too, but their plans are much pricier. I’ve heard great reviews about both of them.. try them out.
Don’t go for any of the unlimited hosts once your site is too big to fit with them.
Hope that helps. All the best.
