- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has friendly Site Builder,
- has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.

- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

It depends on what your website is for, and how important it is. If it is just a personal web site, and not business critical, then you could go with one of the free web hosting services. I use [http://000webhost.com].
But, web hosting is very cheap these days, as low as 2.95 a month – [http://www.lunarpages.com/starter-hosting/].

there are tons of webspaces out there. if its a personal site with no other scripting languages try 1afm if it has php and needs other stuff try awardspace, if its a business website go with Netfirms. Of course though this is my opinion but none of thse companies have done me wrong before.

As previously stated by other answers, there are a lot of free places you can host your website and the answer will vary on what you want to host exactly.
One example of free hosting is at sites.google.com. It’s. of course, hosted by Google. You get 100MB quota.

It may be your current internet provider:
If your current internet provider is Earthlink, AOL, SBC Global and others which provide a homepage; you can easily FTP your own webpage designs as a new homepage even design one from scratch using Netscape Composer. And using a redirection service such as mydomain.com or the forwarding of a parked domain name at godaddy.com, you can easily "mask" the homepage URL with a proper domain name. So in a sense, you have a working ecommerce website disguised as a homepage while still paying your normal monthly Internet provider’s access and hosting fee of the homepage.
Good luck!
