  1. You could make a subdomain. Then create a new directory in your main site called blog.domainname.com. Use the auto-installer(e.g. Fantastico) available in your cpanel to install Wordpess instantly. Specify the subdomain and directory you want to install WordPress. In your home page, create a menu tab(e.g. Blog) and link it to your subdomain name which you use while installing WordPress earlier.

  2. I will try to answer what I think you are asking, however since you are using some phrases you could be asking something different. If so I apologize in advance. I think you are wanting to move your existing wordpress blog from a wordpress.com account to your own site.

    First you need to install wordpress on your new host and make sure it is working
    Second on your blog go to tools then export and select all content
    Third on your new blog select tools and import

    Now the last part of your question refers to modifying the themes. I would highly suggest you do not modify any theme but create whats called child themes. Do a google search for create wordpress child themes and do some research before you start.
