A frequently-asked question:
Hi. I have a website that was built by someone other than me. I need to now know how to load that website onto my domain name. I have a FTP program called Forklift on my mac but I don’t know how to use it. I have been looking for tutorials but have been unsuccessful in finding them. I don’t know too much about my hosting cpanel either.
If anyone can tell me in detail what I need to know (or give me links to some tutorials) I would greatly appreciate it!
Answer: You are not alone. Free hosting will not be the best hosting for you. Web hosting is one of the most critical thing for your online presence and can mean the success and failure for your business.
To answer your query, here are 7 things to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- has friendly Live Chat from the start,
- gives unlimited storage,
- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has easy Site Builder,
- has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their best dedicated server plans if and when your business require.
Answering your question, 92% of Webmasters recommended to try Hostgator. If you need an “unlimited” hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.
What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. Who Should Not Try Hostgator
To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:
- No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost
If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

Hi Manwithguitar!
are you making some cool musical site? 🙂 Well, first of all do you have a host? A domain name is just that – a name which you register online and which should point to a host. So besides owning a domain you need an actual physical server where to store the files.
If you don’t yet have one I suggest you to use: http://goo.gl/CNi3z. To be fair, this is an affiliate link meaning that I get a commission when people sign up through it. If you don’t want to sign up through my link, just google "Bluehost". I have over 40 sites with them including three upgraded to dedicated hosting with them and, for the price they charge (less than a fiver), you will not find any better.
Once you sign up with the host they will give you your ftp username and password and you can use a program such a filezilla to upload the files to the server. You will also need to configure your domain name to point out to your server. You do this by going to your registrar and setting the DNS. Usually all registrars have a help section with links explaining exactly how to go through this process.
Without more information regarding the services that you are using, I unfortunately can’t help you further.
