Answer: It is not your fault you got confused. Free hosting will most probably never be the best hosting for you. Web hosting is the heart of your web presence and can mean the success and failure for your business.
To answer your query, here are 7 factors to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- lets you try their service for free or at very low price,
- gives more-than-enough storage,
- offers no limit on bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has friendly Site Builder,
- has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their cheap dedicated server plans if and when your business require.
To answer your question, why not try Hostgator. If you are building your first website and needs a hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.
What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. Who Should Not Try Hostgator
To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:
- No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost
If you are still not sure if HG is right for you, or you have specific query about anything at all, try the Live Chat at HG. They are fast and knowledgeable. Just shoot them some questions before you decide.

Most free forums like phpbb will use php and mysql, for the programming language and database. For hosting, you will want the following:
– Linux (windows is okay, but most win hosting plans don’t have php/mysql)
– Webspace is going to be how much room there is to store *pages* this does not count the content of posts that are made to those pages, so you probably won’t need a whole lot even if the forum gets large. 150 is probably more than enough.
– Mysql database count = how many databases you can make. phpbb will need to make one database to do its thing. You may want to allow more if you put other web-based applications up that need a database.
– Mysql space = how much space the db can take up. This is going to hold the actual posts made on the board. So for this, you’ll want a good amount. If the posts are mostly text and images linked off of photobucket or similar though, it will take a long time to fill even 100 megs. a post is usually anywhere from 1k – 20k of text. so for 1M you are looking at about 50 posts worst case. 100 megs would give you 5000 posts before time to delete old ones to clear up space.
– # email accounts. this is not a req. of the phpbb stuff, and is pretty much up to you. If you don’t plan on using the hosting for email, just ignore this.
All in all, remember that most hosting plans will allow you to quickly upgrade when you need to with a few clicks on your account page. Don’t be afraid to start off with a small plan and upgrade as you grow.
For hosting, I reccomend Site5, but you can find many sites with similar offerings. Good luck!

I sugges you the following..
Linux.
Because cheaper, fully supported PHP and MySQL. phpBB is surely working with PHP and MySQL, give the good environment to it. No need to use Windows OS, the reason is simple: don’t pay more and you are not using ASP.
Webspace
Get 150MB or more that that is ok. Be sure the space of webpage and the space for mySQL are same space. Some hosting may tell you 150MB of web space and 10MB of mySQL. If you got 10MB of mySQL, oh my!!! Ask your web hosting company before paying any fee.
Monthly data transfer
Get the maximum. My website is placed on the server in my country, so I get unlimited data transfer. Last 2 years I placed outside, too terrible!
mySQL database
I suggest you to have in number: 5 or 10 for the extra installation in the future.
Database space
I you can ask your hosting company about this, ask him.
"150 MB you give me include database space or not?"
Or
"My database space is a part of webpage disk space, isn’t it?"
and try to give him an example : "If mysql database space is full, I still upload files to my diskspace, doesn’t it?"
Or many hardcore case. If your hosting can clear your question, keep this hosting company in your favorite and don’t forget to have his name.
number of email account and email space
Not necessary to think about that, how many co-worker in your team? Get enough for them and a little more for the future.
The most important things are mysql space, number of mysql and database space….
I mostly recommend you to find the good support for your web hosting.
Oh… so many lines, how can I write this?
