A frequently-asked query:
I have an idea for a website and my ISP has always told me they’d give me ‘X’ amount of webspace. Unfortunately this did not turn out to be true so can I set up a website without any outlay? If so, how?
P.S. I am a complete novice so nothing overly complicated please. Thanks.
Answer: You are not alone. Free hosting will not be the best hosting for you. Web hosting is the heart of your online presence and can mean the life or death to your business.
Before we answer your question, let us review the 7 factors to look for in a good web hosting. An excellent hosting:
- has at least 30 days money back guarantee,
- gives more-than-enough diskspace,
- offers unlimited bandwidth,
- gives unlimited add-on domains,
- has easy Site Builder,
- has Fantastico and QuickInstall to quickly install apps like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, OSCommerce, ZenCart and more
- can be easily upgraded to VPS or one of their cheap dedicated server plans if and when your business require.
To answer your question, 92% of Webmasters recommended to try Hostgator. If you are building your first website and needs a hosting plan, experts usually highly recommend going with Hostgator because they are the best cheap cpanel hosting around.
What if you find out that Hostgator sucks after you signed up with them? HG has 45 days, longer-than-industry-average money back guarantee so you have ample time to test them out. They are rated A+ by Better Business Bureau which shows their commitment to customer satisfaction. You also do not have to pay for the first month. You can just try their fully functional hosting service – you pay only $0.01 (you need to use the special coupon code). Do you know any other hosting company that can give you that kind of assurance? Who Should Not Try Hostgator
To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:
- No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

O.K I’m going to discuss the 2 processes required to make a website, 1.)creating it and 2.)putting it on a server. (I’m not sure if you’ve actually made your website yet.)
1.)
a.) FREE OPTION
To create a website for free you have to do everything yourself. you’ll need a program like adobe dreamweaver, then depending on how complex your idea is, gain a basic/good knowledge of the program and HTML coding. Then design and create it yourself.
b.) you can pay a web design company to make the website for you, and they’ll probably also organise getting it online for you (discussed in part 2) I am not sure how much this costs though.
2.)
a.)
Say you made a DIY website in dreamweaver. Now you need to save it to a place that everyone can access, thus making it "online"
There is a way to get your site online completely for free, but that involves changing various technicalities in your computer to turn it into a Server machine.
(a server is the computer/hard drive that your website is saved on. People connect to your server when they view your website.)
I won’t go into turning your PC into a server as it’s too complicated to explain here.
b.)
Anyway, say you don’t want your PCto be the server for your website.
You can pay a company a fee for hosting your website, instead of you doing it. This is relatively cheap. godaddy.com is an example of a web host.
So that’s it! In summary. you either make it in a design program from scratch, or pay someone to do it for you. to get it online you either make your PC into a server, or pay some company a small fee for them to do it.
