To be honest, no web hosting service is perfect. Drawback of Hostgator includes:
- No free domain name – but you can easily get a domain name from the best domain registrar such as Godaddy or Namecheap for $10 or less. Would you agree that a website is not complete without a domain name?
- You need to pay full price after your first invoice – well, they need to make money too and all the support and great service do come with a cost

I have a Cpanel account with webhostingpad and I do the following:
under ‘Domains’ select ‘Addon Domains’ – fill in the fields as you need
Effectively what this does is create a subdomain within a folder on your server. You then point your domain at your server IP address, and the fact that you have added a domain in this manner means that your server knows where to find the folder. Whilst you are waiting for the DNS changes to point at your server, you can monitor your site files on the sub-domain.
EG. I added the domain ‘socket939.co.uk’ to my account hosted as ‘livewyre.net’, the files are held in a folder ‘socket939’ in my root directory. The site files are accessible as ‘socket939.livewyre.net’ or ‘socket939.co.uk’ now that the DNS setting have kicked in.
The difference between this and a subdomain is that the server has been ‘told’ that this folder is to be the host for the given domain name. Incidentally I just noticed that the same site is also available at ‘livewyre.net/socket939’ too! although it cannot find some of the images.
You don’t have to have the folder as your domain name as long as you remember in which folders your sites are hosted…!
You can then set up a separate FTP account with password which is just for that folder (in case it is to be accessed by a third party).
Hope that helps…

Select "Addon Domains" from the main page in cPanel. Then fill in the information about your domain and that’s it. After that you can go to the "File Manager" and upload your files.
